Portrait
of Benoît Viellefon
Acrylic on canvas. 77x100 cm. |
|

 |
Portrait
of Andy
Acrylic on panel. 17x27,5 cm. |
|
| Benoît is a big fan of
vintage planes. Historic detail counts and a lot of research was
necessary. No P51 Mustang fighter was available (!) and so I worked
from pictures and adapted the direction of the light to fit with
the rest of the composition. |
|
| I wanted this portrait to have
light and warmth, to show Andy just as he is: calm, welcoming, feet
on the ground. All the qualities you need when you work as a nurse.
John Singer Sargent said: "Every time I paint a portrait I
lose a friend". Fingers crossed, so far I haven't! |

"La
Dormeuse", Tamara de Lempicka
Reproduction.
Oil on canvas. 90x70 cm. |
|

 |
Marilyn
Monroe
Acrylic on panel. 33x50 cm. |
|
| Be careful when you make a
reproduction! I meticulously reproduced each detail and the client
was very happy. Until I realised, flicking through other Art books,
that the picture I had worked from had been inverted!! My client,
who has a great sense of humour, kept the painting, amused by the
idea of probably being the only owner of an inverted Tamara de Lempicka
reproduction. |
|
| Painting Marylin is risky:
she has become a bit of a kitsch icon. You can see her staring from
every street artists portfolio. She is so recognisable that
the public wont forgive you for anything not completely right.
I decided to make it over the top: taking inspiration from medieval
icons, I created a religious atmosphere around this 20th Century
icon. The painting is nearly done, I hope to find time to finish
soon! |

François
Gaudard d'Allaines
Oil on canvas. 90x110 cm. |

 |
"La
Liseuse", Fragonard
Reproduction.
Oil on wood. 100x153 cm. |
|
| This is part of a series of
portraits commissioned by Broussais Hospital, Paris. Just like Marilyn's
portrait, I could work only from pictures as the model has passed
away. Creating a colour image from a black and white original was
a further challenge. My client was very happy about the "spark
of life" I gave to the series. |
|
| Commissioned by AB Production
(working for TF1, one of the main French Television channels), this
reproduction was displayed on a TV set... and stolen! I decided
to take it as a compliment. |

Acrylic. 500x330 cm. |
|
| At the close of a TV
set decoration contract I was asked to leave a souvenir. I let them
chose the model and here is the result. Technically, it was quite
a challenge to make a 1,70 meter high painting from a 9 cm picture.
Ideally I wouldve added humour to the pose, but the guys were
very happy with the woman in a constant state of undress. If only
she could make them coffee too
! |
|
| TV set commission for
French channel AB Production. Painting a mural, especially for TV
or film, requires a specific technique. Up close you will only see
patches of colours but step back several meters and it all takes
shape. You have to simplify your work, painting with only a few
colours and tones avoiding unnecessary details that cameras won't
see. |
