This expose draws on recently discovered Soviet archival

to detail how the USSR produced a rivet-for-rivet
copy of the Superfortress. Follow the development
of the B-29 from its first proposal to the perilous
early flights in the Pacific, and learn about the
B-29s that touched down and were impounded in Vladivostok

American War Eagles:
B-29 Superfortress - DVD
Wings of Destruction.
The B-29 was the most advanced bomber to see operational
service during WWII. Designed to replace the B-17
and B-24, it was instead sent to the Pacific to use
its long-range capability for attacking Japan from
bases in China. In August 1945, the Enola Gay and
Bock's Car made history over Hiroshima and Nagasaki
by becoming the only two aircraft to drop atomic bombs
during wartime. Color, 52 minutes. |

Unsung Heroes of the
B-29s
History Alive -
VHS Video
The B-29 bomber, which saw action almost exclusively
in the Pacific Theater during World War II, represented
a giant leap forward technologically from the B-17s
and B-24s that flew over Europe. But the rush to develop
the B-29 claimed scores of lives in hurry-up testing,
where design and manufacturing flaws were paid for
in blood before the plane even entered active service.
Then, scores of dead-low bombing runs without guns
into the face of determined kamikaze defenses resulted
in captured crews who suffered horribly in Japanese
prison camps. Finally, came the successful missions
from high above Japanese defenses. This video also
includes a blow-by-blow account of the mission to
drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima from Paul Tibbets,
the pilot. 50 minutes. |
