Agile as the Devil
Dan Zoernig. In October 1917, the Fokker Dr.I appeared
in significant numbers over the Western Front. The
tri-plane, or "dreidecker," possessed a
top speed of 115 mph and a superior rate of climb.
Though its engine was considered a little underpowered,
the Dr.I achieved a level of maneuverability that
prompted Manfred von Richthofen to write of its qualities,
"Climbs like an ape, and as agile as the devil."
