Birth of a Legend
Stan Stokes. Print depicts Colin Kelly's B-17 under
heavy attack from Zero fighters led by the ranking
Japanese ace, Saburo Sakai. As Kelly piloted the crippled

to bail out, and his attempt to crash-land the B-17

1942, when Ensign Jack Reid of VP-44, piloting a PBY
Catalina flying boat, spotted the main Japanese invasion
force heading for Midway. Shadowing them for several
hours, Reid was able to alert U.S. troops at Midway.
They sent B-17s, PBYs and other airplane from the
island for a torpedo attack on the invasion fleet,
preceding the battle at Midway the next morning. Limited

Marii Chernev. In 1942, a heavy cruiser squadron begins
its shore bombardment of Japanese positions on the
island of Kiska, Alaska. During the mission, Curtiss
SOC Seagull floatplanes spotting the gunfire for the
American cruiser squadron were jumped by a flight
of Japanese "Rufe" floatplanes. Ducking
into the clouds, the SOCs were able to escape the
oncoming Japanese but their mission of fire direction
