other roles than a bomber (naval reconnaissance, anti-submarine
warfare and as transports), the B-24 performed well
in every capacity. Video traces the development of

in the Pacific Theater during World War II, represented
a giant leap forward technologically from the B-17s
and B-24s that flew over Europe. But the rush to develop
the B-29 claimed scores of lives in hurry-up testing,
where design and manufacturing flaws were paid for
in blood before the plane even entered active service.
Then, scores of dead-low bombing runs without guns
into the face of determined kamikaze defenses resulted
in captured crews who suffered horribly in Japanese
prison camps. Finally, came the successful missions
from high above Japanese defenses. This video also
includes a blow-by-blow account of the mission to
drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima from Paul Tibbets,

It was one of the most feared, controversial and successful
aircraft of World War II. And it underwent a reversal
of fortune unmatched by any other plane. When the
B-26 Marauder was introduced in 1940, it was the most
advanced mid-range bomber in the world. But it soon
acquired a reputation for being difficult to fly,
and it was labeled the "Widowmaker." This
video reveals how the B-26 narrowly escaped being
pulled from service. Pilots like Jimmy Doolittle argued
that its intricacies could be mastered and that the
B-26 would prove to be an outstanding plane. They
were right. It's pinpoint accuracy - seen here in
archival film of the bombing of the Benedictine Abbey
on Monte Casino - was unmatched, and its speed and
remarkably low loss rate eventually made the Marauder
